Visitors to Luohe Zoo in Henan were disappointed when the ‘African lion’ they were hoping to see turned out to be a dog, according to local media.
In photos posted online, the cage marked “African lions” clearly contains a Tibetan mastiff, which is neither African nor of the genus Panthera. At least the giant fluffy dogs are kind of the same shape as the animals they were pretending to be, another display purporting to contain snakes was actually rats. Rats do not look like snakes.
An administrator at the zoo tried to brush off the accusations of (incompetent) fakery, saying the real lions “went to another zoo to breed”.
Yu Hua, a government official in charge of the People’s Park where the zoo is located, said the signs would be “promptly corrected”.
At least they weren’t making the “lions” and the “snakes” race on bicycles.
