Authorities in Henan province have detained a police officer accused of grabbing a seven month old baby from her parents and throwing her on the ground, fracturing her skull, Xinhua reports.
Guo Zengxi had reportedly been drinking with friends on July 18 when he came across a couple and their baby.
After betting his friends that the child was just a doll, the police touched her and then grabbed the baby from her father, throwing her to the ground.
The baby was rushed to hospital where she was treated for a fracture in her skull and other injuries. She was discharged on August 5 and is out of danger, but mother told the Global Times that she is “very easily startled and clings to me when she hears cars passing by.”
“She is now very afraid of strangers and sometimes vomits,” the child’s mother added.
Guo himself was hospitalised after he was beaten by locals at the scene, he also covered the child’s medical expenses, around 40,000 yuan. However, the police officer, who was off-duty at the time, only received 15 days confinement as official punishment from the Linzhou Publish Security Bureau.
This lax punishment led to uproar online and authorities pledged to reinvestigate the case.
“The policeman involved in the baby attack was put under criminal detention on Saturday night and was transferred to a detention center in Anyang City this morning,” said Guo Fajie, head of the public security bureau of Anyang City which governs Linzhou.
