Since the new visa law took effect on 1st July, there have been 485 reported overstays — a 20% increase — from Hongqiao and Pudong airports.
The fines that have been dished out total 430,000RMB, which clocks up an average of around 890RMB for each offender.
One Dutchman was lucky enough to be the first person to experience the maximum fine for overstays, and was forced to fork out 10,000RMB at Pudong Airport on 2nd August.
He was hit by the maximum fine for staying 48 days on a 2 week tourist visa.
Americans were the worst culprits, followed by Japanese, Canadians, French and Singaporeans.
