Businessman Hu Xiaojiang was taken hostage in his BMW and driven deep into Henan by his captors on August 13th. The hostage/kidnapper dynamic soon started to get weird, and Hu became surrounded by drunken, sobbing, emotionally distraught young men who just wanted to be his friend.
The entire affair lasted ten hours. Hu was abducted during a business trip in Xi’an when two knife-wielding men hid in his BMW, jumped him, and a third man drove the car out of the city.
After a few hours of their unlawful-detention road trip, the captors pulled over and picked up some roadside snacks and baijiu, only to get thoroughly smashed and uncomfortably emotional. Hu told reporters that the kidnappers shared a bottle of baijiu and some 10 bottles of beer before welling up about their families, parents, financial woes, and their newfound friendship with him.
The abductors told Hu that they were glad to be his friend, and that they would not retaliate if he later led to their arrest. They also knocked .2 million yuan off of his ransom, which brought it down to a cool 1 million.
Unfortunately for the captors, their kidnapping ring/support group was quickly broken up by the Shaanxi and Henan police. The kidnappers have been arrested and Hu is back home, and they almost certainly miss him more than he misses their company.
