If, like me, you are a millennial, Sampology is totally on key with our generation’s need for flashing lights, images, TV, stuff on the internet, music of all genres, talking animals, gifs and most crucially, NYAN cat. He gives his audience all of this in a one of a kind, totally unique audio-visual show. It really should be something. See his show tonight at Arkham.
Shanghaiist: Could you describe what we should expect from your Shanghai show this Friday?
Sampology: An exciting experience for your eyes, ears and feet. It’s an audio visual show where I am mixing video as well as audio together to create a completely new final audio & visual synched together. It’s a lot of fun & enjoyable to check out, most people who see my show for the first time say they’ve never seen anything like it before.
SHist: How did your first ever audio visual performance go?
S: Really fun, it was in Brisbane where I’m from in 2008. I approached the performance from a DJ point of view and combined everything I wanted to come through the soundsystem and onto the screens into one show. The performance has grown and developed organically since that time quite a lot.
SHist: Is there any ethical, epistemological, metaphysical, political (you get the gist) question that you want to bring up with the less comedic sides of your music?
S: That’s the first time I’ve heard the word epistemological in an interview, I had to look up it’s meaning. There’s usually a theme that runs through each show I play, last year it was around the end of the world, (the Super Visual Apocalypse show) and this year it’s more of a raunchy show (Stimulation show) but since it’s the first time I’ve played Shanghai I’m throwing in the best bits of previous shows as well.
SHist: What songs/ music videos inspired you to begin exploring your now distinct style?
S: Monty Python, The Avalanches, Ralph Bakshi, Terry Gilliam, Lee Scratch Perry, Anything that makes me dance or laugh.
