An expensive Japanese-style toilet, or ‘washlet’, bought by a family in Dongguan, Guangdong province exploded in dramatic fashion this month.
According to the Southern Metro Daily, the Liu family — who were fortunately out at the time of the explosion — returned home around 9pm to find their apartment sprinkled with ash and a potent smell of burning coming from the bathroom.
“I opened the door, black dust was floating all over, the smell of plastic burning made me choke and step backwards,” Mrs Liu said.
The bathroom itself was utterly destroyed, covered in soot and debris from the exploded washlet.
Inspectors estimated that the electronic toilet/bidet had exploded some time between 6pm and 9pm. Fortunately for the Lius, the explosion had caused the water pipe the toilet was hooked up to to burst, dousing the flames before they could do more damage.
Preliminary estimations put the damage done by the toilet as high as 300,000 yuan. Dongpeng Bathroom, which manufactures the washlets, claimed that the model owned by the Lius had been discontinued.
“This has never happened before,” a spokesperson said.
