Was Wang Lijun’s dramatic flight to the US Consulate in Chengdu the result of unrequited feelings for Bo Xilai’s wife Gu Kailai? That’s what Bo claimed in a Jinan court on Monday, saying that Wang was ‘in love’ with Gu.
After ironically dismissing the trial as pure “soap opera”, Bo launched into a tale of love and betrayal that could have come from the most hackneyed daytime TV drama.
“The real reason [for Wang’s defection] is that he had hidden feelings for Gu Kailai. He was consumed with these feelings and couldn’t control himself. He confessed these feelings to Gu Kailai in a letter,” Bo told the court.
According to Bo, Wang presented Gu with a letter expressing his feelings (what is this, middle school?) before slapping himself “eight times in a row”. Gu told Wang he was a “little abnormal”, to which Chongqing’s top cop responded “I was abnormal, but I am normal now.”
Bo said he walked in on this emotional exchange, terrifying Wang into defecting to the US.
“[Wang and Gu] had a very special relationship,” Bo said. “Like glue and paint [Chinese euphemism for being romantically involved].”
At another point in his testimony, Bo claimed that Wang left shoes and other possessions in Gu’s house, asking aides to remove them for him.
Bo and his wife seem to have been estranged at the time of his downfall. Bo admitted earlier in the trial that he cheated on Gu multiple times, and after she found out she went to the UK, taking the couple’s son Bo Guagua with her.
With the trial finally over, Bo now returns to prison to await judgment, a process which may take over a week.
