Two kidnappers in Zhejiang province who kidnapped an 11 year old girl in a plan to blackmail her family to pay off gambling debts ended up giving the child 500 yuan after realising how poor their chosen targets were.
According to the Shanghai Daily, the two kidnappers, surnamed Lu and Xie, were sentenced to four and five years in prison respectively for the kidnapping which took place in early March.
Lu and Xie, natives of southeastern Fujian Province, left their hometown on March 6 after renting a car and buying tools including masks. They targeted the girl, walking alone on the street in Taizhou, three days later.
They had planned to demand 1 million yuan, but the girl said her family could not afford a large ransom.
The two had spent more than 10,000 yuan including the cost of transportation, accommodations and implements on the failed extortion. Police caught the pair in Fujian Province.
The girl was well looked after by her kidnappers, and the pair even gave her 500 yuan to cover her costs (can you get a fapiao for being kidnapped?).
