A poster recently erected at Zhejiang University has gone viral on the Chinese web for encouraging students to date each other and perhaps (gasp!) have sex.
VOC reports that the poster was put up by the Ningbo Institute of Technology, featuring advice for first years students including:
‘Have an extracurricular hobby’
‘Pay closer attention to society’
‘Try dating someone at least once, regardless of success or failure’
Inevitably, in a climate where one university threatened to prosecute (adult, legally responsible) students for having sex with each other, it was the last point which attracted controversy.
A university employee surnamed Lin told the Beijing Youth Daily that the poster was “not intended” to encourage students to have relationships (god forbid) but to help them develop a “correct understanding of love”.
Ningbo Institute of Technology previously attracted controversy when it advised parents not to give their children any more than 600 yuan per month living expenses. Netizens commented on the irony of the same university advocating for students to date each other, asking how anyone was expected to afford to date on 600 yuan per month.
