A sperm bank in Jiangsu is paying college students 5,000 yuan to do something they regularly do for free (though not normally in a cup, or in a clinical environment), Want Daily reports.
Jiangsu People’s Hospital has the only approved sperm bank in the province but yet still apparently struggles to find virile young men willing to masturbate on command. Donors aged between 20 and 50 in possession of a bachelor’s degree — or studying towards one — are eligible for a free physical examination and a stipend of 5,000 yuan in exchange for their time and a small cup of their DNA.
The hospital is so desperate for seminal fluid in fact that some students are even finding work as sperm headhunters. One student, appropriately surnamed Wang, said he was paid a 50 yuan finder’s fee for each person they got to agree to have a sperm screening. Should that student make a successful donation, Wang can earn as much as 1,200 yuan.
Wang told the paper that he earns about 2,000 yuan per month.
There are only 11 sperm banks in China, and many suffer a shortage of donors, leading to a virulent black market. In April, college students in Hebei claimed that they were forced to donate semen while on a “tour” of a local sperm bank.
