The hunky Irish fiddle player, Gregory Harrington is on a mission to bring classical music to the masses. His recent Shanghai show was chockablock with John Williams-type movie classics performed with ‘natural artistry and an ability to dazzle.’
Shanghaiist: Which destination in your six date tour are you looking forward to the most? (Hint: if it’s not Shanghai, you’re wrong)
Gregory Harrington: That would have to be Shanghai. It has a really beautiful cosmopolitan feel to it and I remember being there last time with my dad for a day or two and loving the feel of the city. Looking forward to performing in the City Theatre on Saturday!
SHist: What’s going to be different in your repertoire this time round?
GH: Last time, I mixed classical sonatas with some of the more virtuoso violin short pieces… this time I am playing a really fun program that is all about classical music and movie music – so there are the John Williams pieces from Schindlers List and Scent of a Woman, to the South American Tango of Astor Piazzolla.. There is some Debussy (Claire de Lune, that has been used in movies like Ocens 11 etc) to some beautiful minimalism of Arvo Part and of course a little Adele from the most recent James Bond movie “Skyfall”.
SHist: What do you consider to be the best thing you’ve ever put in your mouth while in China?
GH: Well, I had these really amazing Xiaolongbao that were from the Shanghai region.
SHist: Did you push for this tour or was it a supply / demand thing?
GH: I had a fantastic tour here 3 years ago and sold out many venues so there was interest from the promoters and from venues. Concerts have been great here so far. Both concerts in Beijing (National Centre for the Performing Arts) have already sold out and I’m off to Dalian in the morning so its been a successful tour thus far.
SHist: Scenario: A harem of female admirers swarm the Oriental Centre like rhinoceros stampede during mating season. What is your escape plan?
GH: Harem of beautiful women… Why escape?
