The United States Tennis Association announced Thursday that Li Na has received the Second Annual US Open Sportsmanship Award.
The award is presented to the male and female professional tennis players who best demonstrate excellence in sportsmanship throughout the US Open Series and the US Open.
The French Open winner is one of China’s most popular athletes and all around badass.
“As one of the most successful and respected players on tour, Li embodies what a champion truly is,” said USTA Chairman, CEO and President Dave Haggerty. “We couldn’t be happier to honor her with the US Open Sportsmanship Award.”
Li Na, the first ever Chinese player to reach the US Open semifinals will face World Number One and 16 time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams today at the Arthur Ashe Stadium (at the thoroughly un-China friendly time of 3:45am Saturday morning). Although Williams has beaten Li eight of nine times the two have met, every single match as either gone three sets, seen at least one tiebreak set, or gone to 7-5 in at least one set.
