Kaifu Lee, the 51 year old founder and CEO of Innovation Works and former president of Google China, has revealed on Weibo that he is suffering from lymphoma.
In a post in which he thanked his followers for their messages of support, Lee said that “although lymph cancer doesn’t sound optimistic and it makes family and friend concerned, this is just life: it comes as a surprise, but I should face it calmly. Pain is part of life, I will face the ups and downs of life with a more positive attitude.”
Lee is an active liberal voice on Weibo, particularly with regard to censorship and freedom of speech issues. In February he was banned from both Tencent and Sina Weibo, a move that seemingly backfired when his Twitter account picked up thousands of new followers as Chinese netizens followed Lee over the Great Firewall.
One of six Chinese on Foreign Policy’s list of the 100 Top Global Thinkers, and one of eight in Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, Lee has also been called a traitor and potential CIA agent by Chinese critics.
