China just got cuter. 18 year old female giant panda Jiaozi gave birth to three cubs in southwest China’s Sichuan Province last month, though only one female cub named San’er survived according to the Chengdu Panda Sanctuary.
At the age of 18 which is the equivalent to a 50-year-old in human terms, Jiaozi becomes the oldest panda in the world to conceive three cubs this year.
Jiaozi is the oldest panda in the world to conceive three cubs, 18 panda years is roughly equivalent to a 50 year old human.
Wu Kongju, one of her keepers said of the stillborn cubs:
They looked purple-black as the cub had died. Because the dead cub could not leave the birth canal, Jiaozi had to bite the back of the dead body in order to pull it out. She is a good mother who knew she had to make way for her other two cubs.
After the delivery, vets found out that Jiaozi was suffering from anemia. Due to the illness, Jiaozi couldn’t take care of her surviving cub. Qinghe, a 12 year old panda who gave birth on Aug 14, now nurses San’er every day.
“Panda mothers have loving hearts. They will feed and hold the cub of another panda mother,” said Chen Min, San’er’s keeper.
Giant pandas are one of the world’s most endangered species. About 1,600 live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, while more than 300 live in captivity. They seem to be breeding like rabbits recently though.
