Artist Florentijn Hofman’s Rubber Duck installation is now in China’s capital, but Hong Kongers are heaping criticism onto the Beijing duck.
The SCMP (which has something of a history with the duck) reports on all the ways the Beijing duck is wrong.
Quoting some who worked on constructing the Hong Kong duck, the SCMP points out the the Beijing Rubber Duck’s beak makes it look more like a chicken than a duck, it was tilting to the right, the platform it sits on was showing etc., all of which was perfect during the Hong Kong installation.
The SCMP also mentioned that the keepers of the Beijing at Beijing Garden Expo Park are being criticised for charging 100 yuan to see the duck, when Hofman, the artist, said the duck “must always be shown to the general public”.
Looking at the pictures, I have to say that, yes, the beak looks like that of a chicken. And yes, it does suck that they’re charging 100 yuan to see the duck (especially since it was free to see in Hong Kong and not that spectacular). But you know what? It’s just a duck.
It’s just a duck, SCMP.
I have a lot of respect for you, SCMP. And this obsession with this ridiculous rubber duck is making me embarrassed for you.
