Tokyo will become the first Asian city to host the Olympics twice after winning the right to
hamstring its burgeoning economic recovery for host the 2020 Summer Games. Toyko also hosted the 1964 games.
The Japanese city beat closest rival Istanbul by 60-36 the second round of voting by secret ballot of unelected, unaccountable IOC members (think Chinese National People’s Congress but more corrupt). Istanbul beat Madrid in a 49-45 tiebreak vote after both cities finished the first round with 26 votes to Toyko’s 42.
In its write up of the announcement, Xinhua comments:
Some supporters of Istanbul had initially thought the Turkish city had been awarded the Olympics before IOC President Jacques Rogge clarified that Istanbul had merely entered the second round.
By “some supporters of Istanbul”, the Chinese news service apparently meant itself, as it preemptively called the vote for the Turkish city earlier in the day:
