A tanker loaded with 30 tons of hydrochloric acid overturned after colliding with a car on a highway in Songjiang district, causing a serious chemical spill, hospitalising the driver and resulting in major traffic jams, Shanghai Daily reports.
Fire fighters in chemical-proof suits spread lime on the ground and sprayed water to dilute or otherwise neutralize the acid, a spokesperson for Songjiang District Environmental Protection Bureau told reporters.
The acid killed plant life around the accident and ate away at the highway’s metal guard rails.
The bureau also closed water gates to nearby rivers to prevent the acid from contaminating the Huangpu River.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
