Air defense sirens will be sounded throughout Shanghai (with the exception of Pudong and Hongqiao airports) to mark National Defense Education Day, the Shanghai Civil Defense Office announced yesterday.
The day falls on the third Saturday of every September, which is September 21 this year.
Local authorities will inform residents about the drills through TV, radio broadcasts and mobile phone text messages.
Residents of Changning district will also hear the sirens from 36 electronic screens that are predominantly used for digital newspaper reading.
The drills are divided into three phases with each lasting for three minutes with a 24 second interval.
The first siren will be sounded from 11:35am to 11:38am and is supposed to be an emergency warning. The second warning from 11:45am to 11:48am will be an air raid alert. The third siren at 12pm is the final all-clear alert.
Nearly 400,000 students from 1,400 primary and middle schools will take part in drills in their schools on September 18, Shanghai Daily reports.
