A five year old girl called Sisi died after being severely bitten on the face and neck by a wolfhound* in Hebei province, Shanghai Daily reports.
Sisi was playing with her eight year old brother near a cotton field in a village near Handan when the grey wolfhound attacked the child.
According to Sisi’s relatives, the girl was lying in a pool of blood with blood flowing from deep cuts in her neck and could hardly be recognized because of the severe wounds to her face.
The child died on the way to the hospital, 40 minutes after the attack.
Police organized a 400 people search team to hunt down the wolfhound, but failed.
Local police tried to shoot the wolfhound when it was seen the next day but avoided doing so for fear of injuring people.
*Numerous breeds of dogs are classified as wolfhounds, it is unclear which breed this dog in particular belongs to though it is most likely a Kunming Wolfhound, a domestic Chinese breed related to German Shepherds.
