After headlining two gigs at Kung Fu Komedy in March, comedian Butch Bradley (Comedy Central, HBO, Late Late Show) has moved to China’s greatest city permanently. Starting on September 20, Butch will be headlining every week at KFK. From September 26, he’ll be hosting a variety show at KFK every Thursday.
We (briefly) caught up with Butch by email as he goes through the hectic craziness of moving from New Jersey to China:
SHist: Congratulations on the move! What is it about Shanghai that attracted you to the city?
Butch Bradley: The comedy scene in Shanghai is blowing up! I want to be apart of it. And anyone in Shanghai should get downtown the Kung fu comedy club.
SHist: Tell us about your upcoming headline gigs and the new variety show.
BB: I wanted to do a show that brought the hippest shanghai acts together under one roof. Me hosting a wide variety of comedy with weekly guest from all the arts.
SHist: What condition is the Chinese English-language comedy scene in, or what potential do you see for it?
BB: The potential is huge! Thats why I’m on my way to Shanghai.
SHist: Have you been able to meet or watch any Chinese comedians, either performing in English or Chinese (including traditional comedy such as ‘cross talk’)?
BB: Yes I have watched Chinese comedians and I’ve seen some great ones! The cool thing about comedy is your constantly learning and I’m sure we will have a lot to share and learn from one another.
SHist: Do you think there will be more western comedians coming to Shanghai in the near future, anyone planned you can give us a hint about?
BB: 100 percent yes. Comedy in Shanghai is big and too cool for anyone not to come visit.
