A retired American firefighter has been hailed as a hero after he stepped in to help Chinese rescuers retrieve a couple from the wreckage of their car on the Shanghai G1501 Expressway, People’s Daily reports.
Speaking to the Shanghai Daily, Tommy Patton said he “only did what he could and should do.”
“I saw them and helped them,” Patton said.
“I saw the foreigner squatting outside the car when I got stuck on the jammed expressway,” one witness to the accident posted on Weibo. “[Patton] kept talking to the injured passengers in the car and tried to keep them conscious.”
Patton lives and works in Taicang, Jiangsu province. This was the third time he helped accident victims in China, Xinmin reports.
