A 38 year old woman who fell into a deserted well managed to survive for 15 days on corn and rainwater before she was finally rescued, Xinhua reports.
The woman, Su Qixiu, fell into the well in rural Henan province while collecting herbs on September 1. Her family was unable to find her for over two weeks.
The abandoned well was surrounded by tall stalks of corn and hard to see, which both enabled Su’s unfortunate fall and prevented searchers from finding her. The inside walls of the well were too smooth for Su to climb out.
“There was nothing [in the well], [so I] ate a bit of raw corn and called for help every day,” Su told the Dahe Daily.
“I spent every day hoping that someone would walk by and rescue me. I called out every day, and although there was no response, I did not give up,” she said.
When Su was finally rescued from the well on the afternoon of September 16, she was incredibly thin, but alive.
Her husband told reporters that she had lost a massive amount of weight during her ordeal.
“She was originally [52kg], now she’s so thin I’m afraid she may not even weigh [36kg],” he said.
Six people died earlier this month when they fell into a well in Jiangxi province. Four of the dead were rescuers. Cause of death is unknown though some reports suggested that the well may have contained gas.
