A farmer from Henan Province who discovered a 6kg turtle was told by a wildlife rescue center to cook and eat it.
The man discovered the large alligator snapping turtle while ploughing a field on September 15. As the species is native to North America and rarely found in China, it could be harmful for local species.
Dong Chaowei, director of the Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Forestry Wildlife Rescue Center suggested either giving the turtle to local wildlife officials or, alternatively, killing and eating it, causing outrage amongst netizens.
We can confidently report that the age of this particular turtle is completely unknown. According to China News Service, a local forestry bureau estimated that it was 500 years old. However, a member of the Science Squirrels Club, an NGO, said it was only five years old.
