Yet another gambling raid in Shanghai. Police have arrested 43 members of a 1.7 billion Yuan gambling ring that targeted locals who had received relocation compensation money from the government in Baoshan district.
A local man had been illegally detained by the ring after racking up a gambling debt of 800,000 yuan and complaining to the police. He had used his life savings and sold an apartment to fund his gambling.
The leaders of the ring, a man surnamed Zhou and his partner, lived a luxurious life in a villa with a chauffeur, despite having no stable jobs.
The police had a hard time proving the ring members were conducting illegal activities, as they used customized Android software on their smartphones to access online gaming sites rather than computers.
