Maybe don’t tell your mom about this one. Yixin, the new messaging app developed by China Telecom and Netease, announced a new feature today that allows its users to make free international phone calls to anyone in China.
Android users can now download Yixin on their smartphone to access the application’s VOIP function that allows them to call anyone in China with no fee, according to Tech in Asia.
In essence, it’s an extension of Yixin’s original distinguishing feature – free OTT messaging (think WhatsApp or Line) that can be received as SMS text messages by non-users. To this end, Yixin works around the biggest obstacle standing in the way of adoption – even if your friends aren’t on it, you can still use Yixin to communicate with them.
The recently-launched Yixin is competing against China’s popular domestic messaging apps such as Wechat, which as of now passes both Twitter and Skype in users.
Meanwhile, definitely-not-a-monopoly China Mobile is being left behind in the dust — cold, forgotten and shrivelling away like children in a Charles Dickens novel.
