Here’s a tip: if you’re in desperate need of money, cut off your own finger and send it to your parents with a note telling them you’ve been kidnapped so they’ll have to send ransom. This fool-proof plan is exactly what a 31 year old man in Hubei did when he needed some quick cash.
Or maybe don’t do that, because it didn’t work for him and now he’s being arrested for extortion, along with his two friends who helped him with the ploy.
The main suspect, Chenmou Huang, and his two friends were reportedly jobless and notoriously lazy. One day while sitting at home drinking, the three got to talking about money matters, and came up with a fake kidnapping scheme to get some money out of Chen’s parents.
In order to make the kidnapping look “legit,” Chen’s friends helped him cut off his index finger to send along with the ransom note. They then sent the finger to his parents by courier and demanded 120,000 yuan for Huang’s “freedom”.
Upon seeing the finger, Chen’s parents called the Longhai police out of panic. The police, however, tracked down Chen and his friends as the culprits. All three are now being tried by court for extortion.
