Hong Kong’s Apple Daily has a blockbuster front page story today: a white woman is working as a dishwasher in Yaumatei. A white woman. Oh my.
According to the paper, Fanny, a Swiss national who has lived in Hong Kong for 30 years. Fanny makes 65 HKD per hour, and reportedly works 10 hours a day, giving her a monthly income of over 10,000 HKD.
It is the article to the left of the piece about Fanny which has attracted Hong Kong netizens’ attention however, according to Bad Canto:
The article on the left is titled “Pitiful Pig”, which is about an injured wild boar. “Pitiful Pig” can also mean “Poor Baby” in Cantonese slang. Netizens think that the title is served as Apple Daily’s opinion on the white woman working as a dishwasher in Hong Kong.
Other netizens commented that Apple Daily’s shock that a white woman could be working in a menial position reflected the paper’s conservatism and inherent racism, “The news has again proven that many people think subconsciously that white people are high class.”
