A hundred new earthquake warning systems are to be installed across Guangdong province by 2016 as part of a 158 million yuan scheme, Nanfang Daily reports.
The warning systems — also known as seismic stations — will have different types of seismic instruments which can record earthquake waves and report seismic activity within 10 seconds of it starting, and can give prior warnings of deadly catastrophes such as the 2012 Sichuan Province earthquake.
Over the past century, Guangdong province has experienced 12 earthquakes of at least 6 on the Richter scale.
Thousands have died as a result of these earthquakes, including an earthquake in the Nan’ao-Nanpeng zone of Guangdong in 1918 which wiped out 80 percent of the local population.
