Two Yunnan travel agencies have been punished after guides forced tourists to pay extra for ‘Tibetan home meals’, SCMP reports.
A CCTV report caught the guides on tape forcing customers to pay 380 yuan each for a “Tibetan home meal” which turned out to be a dinner in a big hall where dancers performed.
The report also showed one the guides yelling at the tourists: “Tour guides in Shangri-la are very horrible, have you heard? Tour guides in Shangri-la will put a knife on your neck, you know. Let’s see if I will put a knife on your neck today.”
Three tourists who were unwilling to pay were thrown off the bus, two hours from the nearest city.
Just recently a tour guide threatened tourists with a knife to buy souvenirs, Taiwanese man was attacked by a mainland tour guide and tourists were forced to pay for sex shows in Thailand.
The Diqing Shangri-la China Youth Travel Service and the Diqing Kawagebo Travel Agency were fined and barred from operating for one month. The tour guides involved had their licenses terminated.
