China’s always been interested in Africa’s diverse wildlife, both for viewing on safari, and shooting and eating, with animals like elephants, crocodiles, antelopes, lions, hippos and monkeys being considered especially delicious.
But due to animal conservation, only elephant, antelope, and crocodile meat are available at the market.
Surprisingly, the Africans aren’t very fond these meats as they are very hard to cook because of their tough texture and don’t taste very good. Though maybe it’s because they’ve never had hippo hong shao style or Peking ostrich.
In Uganda and the Republic of Congo, some Chinese restaurants have crocodile or pangolin meats on the menu that are expensive, but nevertheless attract Chinese customers.
Apparently Bo Guagua, the son of disgraced politician Bo Xilai, bought some mysterious meat from Africa for his father.
So much for Yao Ming’s bid to save the elephants.
