This happens. A bridge at a scenic area in Lushan, Jiangxi province collapsed on Saturday after too many tourists forced their way onto it at once, despite staff’s discouragement. Although 18 of the tourists fell in the water, none were harmed aside from some waterlogged cellphones and cameras. Oh, and the bridge.
According to a local Nanchang news outlet, the area’s management committee said that the bridge was only meant to hold 40 people at a time, but as it was the day of the Double Ninth Festival, tourists were swarming the area, acting “so emotional, climbing railings” and “exacerbating congestion on the bridge approach”.
