China is now home to over 54,000 cenetarians with the oldest being a 127 year old uyghur woman named Alimihan Seyiti. If confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, she could go down as the oldest women ever.
An impressive landmark to be sure, however these numbers also illuminate China’s lopsided age demographic with a rapidly-waning young population and spiking numbers of old people. Experts state that there may not be enough young people nor facilities to care for the elderly in the future, a dilemma compounded by a break in traditional family values and the little emperor syndrome that comes with increased wealth. Just recently, a 94-year-old woman, surnamed Zhang, sued her children for not taking proper care of her.
