Ma Yongdong, a man from China’s Northwest Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region killed his pregnant wife and six other family members in their home on Oct. 14, Xinhua reports. Ma confessed to the crimes, and as an investigation into his motives continues the police think a “marital dispute” was the cause of the horrendous crime.
Villagers said that they often heard the couple quarreling, and that in fact his wife, Lan Xiuying was attempting to get a divorce. Friction was also reported between Ma and his in-laws. Lan’s relatives told Xinhua that Ma had threatened Lan saying, “If you insist on divorcing me, I’ll kill your family.” Ma’s gambling was most likely the cause of the disputes, and Lan’s relatives said he even lost his job at the local coal mine because of his problem.
Among the family members killed were his parents in-law, grandparents in-law, and two nieces, ages 3 and 1.
