Local Customs in a Yunnan province city said yesterday that around 750 kilograms of human hair were packed inside of 26 parcels valued at 75,000 yuan (12,323 USD), China News Service reported.
The officials seized the hair in a recent crackdown, although there has been no information released about arrests or the date of the seizure.
According to Shanghai Daily, “Human hair that has not been properly processed is classified as waste and cannot legally be imported, according to national rules.”
The hair was apprehended in Ruili, at Yunnan’s western border adjoining Myanmar, where women typically sport very long hairstyles.
“To meet the huge demand for products like wigs in China, smugglers import hair from poor countries bordering China,” the Daily reports.
