Modern medicine does it again: doctors have successfully grown a new face for a 17 year-old burn victim in Fujian province using her own chest:
Xu Jianmei suffered horrible disfigurement in an fire when she was five. She lost her chin, eyelids, and a large part of her right ear to burns. At the time her family could not afford any surgeries to correct the missing parts.
Years later, the opportunity presented itself. A team of doctors, maybe after hearing about the guy who grew a new nose on his forehead, got the idea to transplant grafts of skin from her thigh on her chest, to grow new skin for the face. Last week the surgeries were completed, although the healing process will take several months.
“With her new face, she will be able to express herself in a more precise way. She will even be able to blush when her emotions change.” Says Jian Chenghong, one of her surgeons.
