With some of the stories coming out of China about love and marriage these days, it’s easy to become cynical about this topic. You may now take the next 5 minutes to be a softie. A Wuhan couple in their 90s and who have been married for 75 years passed away within 15 hours of each other at the end of October, Wuhan Evening News reports.
The man, 92 and his wife, 93, left six children — the oldest being 75 — and 15 grandchildren behind. The two, who met in an arranged marriage, were described to have had a respectful and happy marriage. In what is an epic case of over-achievement, not only did the two manage to bring up their children through the most tumultuous years in recent Chinese history, send them to school and survive the decades immediately post-1949, they also managed to bring up 12 of their 15 grand kids.
The two, who had been in a nursing home since May as their home village was being demolished, had been suffering from poor health, which deteriorated even further towards the end of September. Soon, the old lady was unable to leave her bed but her husband continued to care for her despite his shaky mental state. The old lady passed away at 6pm on 30 October, with her husband following the next morning at 9. Family members kept news of her death from him, so he never knew she had passed. The family believes that more than 70 years of marriage have created a bond between the two that has spanned even death.
Of course, the two aren’t the only ones who have had long lasting marriages: here’s a really really cute photograph of couples celebrating 50 years of marriage here.
