On 23 September, a Fujian businessman surnamed Zhang was kidnapped in Shenzhen while on business. A 50 million yuan ransom was demanded for his release, which occurred after 185 kg of gold was handed over. It later emerged during investigations by Shenzhen police one of the suspects in the case, another man named Zhang, came from the same county near, well, Zhangzhou in Fujian province.
Alas, the kidnappers’ revelry was short-lived. A month-long campaign between the Shenzhen and Zhangzhou police finally brought down the three masterminds and seven accomplices. 158 kg of the loot worth 43 million yuan was also recovered, including 77 kg hidden in a pig sty. Two men also remain at large.
Clearly another case of gold madness gone too far. Small consolation: the gold bars didn’t appear to have been hidden somewhere too funky.
