Sun Yang, the 21-year-old Olympic swimming champion, is currently sitting in police detention in Hangzhou until next Monday. Sun has been detained on the charge of driving without a license after the Porsche Cayenne he was driving was “involved in a collision with” a bus.
Sun took to Weibo (while detained) to send out apologies and such, which were then translated by South China Morning Post. I have posted them here, along their further translation from bullshit into English (in bold).
“The incident has caused enormous impact on society and the public,” [My PR guy is freaking the hell out] said Sun’s post. “I’m deeply sorry and will reflect profoundly on it.” [I’m sorry that there was a bus there, I really wish I hadn’t gotten caught]
He added that the “mistake” [fuck-up] was due to his “meagre knowledge of the law” [Underestimated a traffic cop’s resistance to smooth talk] because he had been “busy with training” [Blowing off his training]
[…] “As a public figure, how dare he to beg for forgiveness after making such a wilful mistake by treating other people’s lives as a joke?” wrote one Sina Weibo user.
Other users pointed out that it was “common sense” that driving without a licence was illegal.
Sun was also fined an unspecified amount, but it’s extraordinarily unlikely that the balance was anything close to the amount that he could potentially lose if sponsors start to get wet feet.
