Details are still a bit sketchy, but the headline essentially speaks for itself: ten people in Guiyang, Guizhou province, have been arrested after stealing a tree from the Lagou Nature Reserve in Guangxi, more than 3,000 km away. The tree weighs 26-tons and is around 2 meters in diameter; in other words, it’s a bit harder to steal than, say, most anything else.
Following the arrests, the walnut tree has been returned to the Lagou Reserve, where it will be replanted and can continue being a tree and doing tree things for the foreseeable future. Walnut trees are quite expensive and are treasured for their rich wood; this tree was valued at 1 million yuan, but was found intact and not yet chopped up and turned into an armoire or dresser.
