Two foreign students, one French and one Indonesian, were hospitalized with serious injuries after being beaten with a hammer by a crazed Shanghai resident on Friday. The man, an Anhui native surnamed Hu, was arrested at the scene and his beloved iron hammer was seized by police.
It doesn’t appear as though the man were aiming specifically for foreigners; initial reports look as though he went on a spontaneous rampage (uncomfortably common in China) and the students happened to be in the area, as China Daily reports:
At about 11:20 am on Friday, police in northern Shanghai’s Baoshan district received a report that two women had been attacked on Shangda Road and were lying on the ground with bloodied heads.
Police officers and medical workers were sent to take the women to a hospital and search for the suspect.
About 10 minutes later, officers captured the suspect, Hu, on Hutai Road and seized an iron hammer he was carrying.
Police said over the weekend that Hu had been embroiled in a dispute with others before randomly attacking passers-by.
The students, both girls, are believed to attend Shanghai University’s College of International Exchange. There have not been any updates on the girls’ conditions, other than that they are still hospitalized.
