An exhaustive search for a five-year-old child who fell into an open manhole that was under construction in Hunan is currently ongoing. The search calls attention to one of many cases of people falling down open manhole covers due to inadequate coverage of sewer openings across various Chinese cities.
In May of this year, a woman went missing after falling down an improperly sealed manhole during a severe storm and was found dead days later.
In the same month, a young boy was killed after falling into an uncovered manhole while playing with his friends.
All three instances took place in Hunan province.
Earlier this year, Beijing installed 1,000 trial safety nets across the city in an attempt to keep cyclists and pedestrians from falling in after it was discovered that people were stealing the manhole covers and selling them for scrap metal (a crime for which Chinese officials have now said thieves can face the death penalty).
