A baby boy at a funeral home in Anhui who was declared dead startled staff when he awoke crying before he was set to be cremated, reports said on Thursday.
According to Xinhua, staff at at the funeral home in Hefei found the baby alive on Wednesday morning, two days after he was pronounced dead at the Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital.
Authorities reportedly revoked the license of the doctor who wrongly declared the baby dead after he was treated for abnormalities until Monday, when his condition worsened.
The baby, less than one month old, was immediately sent back to the hospital in Anhui for emergency treatment.
The hospital had issued a death certificate for the baby, who was meant to be cremated under standard procedures, according to the Hefei Municipal Funeral Parlor.
Hospital staff said that the baby suffered from a congenital respiratory system malformation after being born and his parents had agreed to give up medical treatment on November 12, according to the Xinhua report.
“Because the baby still had life signs, we continued to give him transfusion to maintain his life for humanitarian reasons,” one staff member was quoted as saying in the report.
Associated Press reports that the doctor, surnamed Cha, was ruled as negligent by authorities, and the reasons for his declaring the baby as dead are being further investigated.
The boy is now being treated in critical condition.
