There is something about exiled dissidents that usually adds a spark of theatricality to their protests: see, Wang Juntao sitting in a cage in Times Square. Yesterday, however, two dissidents chose to honor Liu Xiaobo and his family’s struggles by, well, running around naked in Sweden.
There is a bit more to it than that, to be fair. The two men, Liao Yiwu and Bei Ling, chose their location because “it was here [Sweden] where Mo Yan, a defender of censorship and a senior Communist Cadre, was awarded the Nobel Prize For Literature last year.” Their reasonings and goals are laid out in an aptly titled document, “Our Naked Declaration,” which is worth a read.
The two sought to raise awareness about the persecution not only of Liu Xiaobo, but also his wife Liu Xia, and brother-in-law Liu Hui, all of whom are entangled in various organs of the Chinese prison system.
A noble cause, for sure, but streaking? To each his own.
