At least 16 people were killed during a violent confrontation with the police near Kashgar, Xinjiang Autonomous Region yesterday, in what media reports are calling a ‘terror attack’.
According to a report by Xinjiang government-run www.ts.cn, the clash occurred when police in Kashgar were ambushed by bomb-throwing, machete-wielding “terrorist assailants” when trying to arrest suspects for an unspecified crime.
After two policemen were killed, police returned fire, killing 14 attackers and arresting two others.
This incident comes just a month after a deadly attack on a police station in Xinjiang and a terrorist attack outside Tiananmen Square that resulted in the arrest of five Uyghurs from Xinjiang.
Further details of the event have not yet been confirmed and the case is under investigation
