One official has been suspended after a school visit turned into a drinking bender that left a local administrator dead in Peng’an county, Sichuan. Yang Huaiquan, the official, visited the Zhonghua Primary School along with three others from the County Bureau of Education, and were given an (apparently over-enthusiastic) toast by teaching director Duan Weizhong, who later died from what appears to be alcohol poisoning.
According to the China Daily, Duan toasted the visitors in the school’s cafeteria and quickly became quite drunk, and was sent home to sleep it off:
His wife came home after work around 6 pm and found Duan sleeping. She asked a village doctor to give him a transfusion of glucose and other medicines.
At around 6 am the next day, she noticed that his face was pale and dialed 120, the emergency medical aid telephone number. But by the time medics arrived, Duan was dead.
This is a bit reminiscent of that time last month when oh hey people drank way too much at an official banquet and somebody died. If it’s possible to die from excessive drinking while entertaining four people in your primary school cafeteria in the middle of the daytime, then that extravagance crack-down can’t come quickly enough.
