Actress Zhang Ziyi has reportedly reached an undisclosed settlement with US-based rumor web site Boxun.com, which she had sued last year for libel after it published stories saying she was sleeping with government officials for money—one of the officials being Bo Xilai.
According to Alarabiya.net, the English-language news web site retracted its “negative and untrue” reports that began running in May.
“These false reports about Zhang Ziyi should never have been published. As a result, Boxun News now renders its unreserved apology to Zhang Ziyi, has removed the entire series of articles about Zhang Ziyi from the Boxun News website, and issues this formal retraction,” said Boxun, whose reports regularly allege human rights violations and political scandals and which is blocked in China.
The web site published untrue stories saying that the actress had been paid $100 million over 10 years for having sex with Bo and other high-ranking Chinese officials. At the time, the downfall of the former politician, now imprisoned for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power, was well underway.
According to court documents, the 34-year-old actress claimed to have suffered over $250,000 for specific damages in addition to damages for injury to her reputation.
In its apology, Boxun said that its articles were based on information provided by anonymous sources “who cannot support the information provided”.
