Although we are constantly being reminded of Xi Jinping’s efforts to crack down on excessive government spending, officials in this rural district of Beijing don’t really seem fazed and have gone ahead and built this ornate office complex that’s being called a Kremlin knockoff.
Pictures of the buildings spotted in Mentougou, Beijing were published by Beijing Youth Daily this week after residents took notice to the golden domes and extravagant architecture similar to the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow’s Kremlin, SCMP reports.
“We had four new buildings in our community; they look just like the Kremlin.” a Mentougou resident, whom the newspaper identified only by his last name, Du, told the Beijing Youth Daily. “It wasn’t until we saw that one of the buildings said ‘Meteorological Bureau’ that we realised it’s a government building!”
Government documents showed that one of the Mentougou buildings cost 9.34 million yuan to design and the other cost a total of 21.25 million yuan to build, according to the original report.
