A female dog has taken the role of nursing two small Siberian tigers at the Hangzhou Wild Animal World in Zhejiang province after the tiger mother began showing signs of neglect towards the cubs.
The two Siberian tiger sisters were born on November 10 at the sanctuary, but breeders feared that their health was in danger after observing the mothers’ lack of nurture towards the cubs.
The dog named Wang appeared nervous and scared when the tigers first began nursing, but eventually her maternal instincts overrode her anxieties and breeders say that she is very at ease caring for the cubs, CZTV.com reports.
Breeders say the two tigers have particularly large appetites, nursing up to six times a day, sometimes with the dog’s own three pups.
She looks pretty thrilled about it.
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a dog play tiger mom. In October, a female labrador was chosen to take on the role at the Nanchang Zoo in Jiangxi province because zookeepers feared the cubs would die if left with their mother. Last year, Siberian tiger cubs abandoned by their mother were nursed by a dog at a zoo in Rongcheng, China.
