Images like these never fail to shock. The photo on the left showing the Shanghai Tower under construction was taken August 3, 2013. In the photo on the right, taken on December 26, the skyscraper has seemingly disappeared, shrouded by smog.
The director of Shanghai’s environmental protection bureau told legislators on Thursday that it would take a 10 year plan to ease the city’s worsening air pollution crisis. “We shall have determination to prepare for a tough and long battle,” but that the heavy smog hovering over the city “can hardly change in a short period of time,” he said.
