As many as six people were seen being taken into ambulances outside of Tiananmen Square around 9 a.m. this morning after they had reportedly drank pesticides to draw attention to their protests.
The petitioners had been distributing leaflets on the west side of Tiananmen Square prior to the incident, according to witnesses. Police immediately called for medical help when they arrived at the scene and the protesters were taken to the hospital.
It has not yet been disclosed what cause the protesters were trying to draw attention to.
A similar incident occurred on December 11 when 12 people drank pesticides outside of the Qianmen Watch Tower in Beijing to petition the forced demolitions of their homes in Wuhan. Authorities called it a group suicide attempt.
As a gesture of protest, they submitted a letter to the Wuhan municipal petition office last month, seeking permission to “commit suicide collectively” as they were hopeless after three years of unsuccessfully petitioning against the demolition.
